The Walking Dead in Bulgaria
on 2016-04-20 in Bulgaria
Crossing the border into Bulgaria went without a hitch. Our previous plan to ride to the black sea was thrown over board due to the weather forecast. We decided it was worth trying to pass on the rain and therefore also see the Devetashka Cave in western Bulgaria. More than 30.000 bats are living there and it is one of the biggest breading grounds in Europe. Sadly we did not see any, because parts of the cave were closed so that we wouldn't disturb the breading process. Because of the vast size and beautiful scenery it was more than worth the visit. Shortly before the cave we took another detour on the tip of a local we met whilst shopping for dinner. He told us we should take a look at the Krushuna Waterfalls since they were a popular tourist spot in the summer.
After we visited the cave and the waterfall, we decided to ride from west to east up to the black sea. We rode across beautiful and juicy green mountain scenery in order to get to "Cape Emine", the furthest point in the east of Bulgaria. The way to the lighthouse was blocked by military to our disappointment. Still the rocky cliff to the ocean and the nice gravel road was worth the ride and made for a nice background.
We had planned to eat at the large tourist city near by and maybe go out for a couple of cold ones. We were certain that there would be tons of restaurants and bars, because there were huge signs and hotels everywhere. We were very surprised to find the whole city abandoned once we arrived. We knew it was not the right season, but the view of rundown buildings and hotels stunned us at first. We took the chance to ride along the beach. It was a view straight from the movies, we were all reminded of the scenes from the walking dead while we rode past torn down stores and buildings.
